Amidst apartment towers populated by immigrants and Amsterdam's Surinamese community, three talented young people meet on the rocky road to rhythm-and-blues fame. The documentary follows them to their singing and dancing classes, to performances and into their homes where they express their dreams and hopes. Will their dreams eventually come true?
Rachid is thirteen, Marlou nineteen and Helga twenty-nine. Three young people dreaming of a successful singing career. To achieve this, they work hard and grab every opportunity that comes their way. They dream of performing at big concert halls and recording their own CD. Their teacher, Rudi Duurvoort, has witnessed many of his students become famous; these shining examples testify to the possibility of a musical breakthrough.
Brigit van Dam followed these young people over the course of a summer for I want to be famous. They perform on stage at festivals and other occasions. Appearing at 'Sail 2000' in Amsterdam is particularly important - music industry talent scouts are rumoured to be present. A first studio audition brings success within Rachid's reach, but he is also warned that his life will change drastically. Even a performance at a birthday party can add to the reputation of these aspiring singers. Although dreams sometimes clash with reality, enthusiasm and the solid belief that their day of fame will come give these young people the energy and determination to continue to pursue their dream.
