"If you have a hundred sons, name them all Mohammed."

In Amsterdam, Rotterdam and The Hague, the name Mohammed is becoming increasingly common. On the top-20 name lists in some cities, it even comes in first. It is a Moroccan tradition to name one's first son after the founder of Islam, and given that Moroccan women tend to have more children than indigenous Dutch women, the name Mohammed will doubtlessly maintain its prevalence.*

Who are these young Moroccans named Mohammed who will have more and more of an impact on their city in the coming years? How do they see the world in which they are growing up? Mohammed will serve as an investigation into the lives of ten young men of The Hague who share this name. One has just begun a career as a pro-boxer. Another must work very hard to pass his high school exams, while still another cleans a hospital for a living while dreaming of a career in singing. The portraits are documentary scenes of the young men's surroundings, detailing the moments and places that say the most for and about them.

* The name Mohammed can be spelled in several ways, such as Mohamed, Mohammed or Mohamad. In Amsterdam, this name has taken first place away from traditional boys' names such as Thomas, Max, Daan and Tim...Of the 4.500 children born in Amsterdam each year, 45 percent has indigenous parents and 55 percent immigrant parents...Some parents take the saying "If you have a hundred sons, name them all Mohammed" so literally that they give the name to their second son as well. In the Netherlands, there are 7.166 men named Mohammed. Approximately 500 of them have a brother with the same name or a variant thereof. (NRC Handelsblad, 1 September 2001)
