Viewpoint Productions produces documentary films with a strong visual and narrative approach. The Viewpoint production team initiates and develops projects, putting together the optimum combination of talent, content and technology. Producers Valérie Schuit and Tamara Vuurmans work to provide the solid foundations on which outstanding documentary films can be made. Public Relations are managed by Astrid Willemsteijn.
Set up in 1990, Viewpoint Productions has delivered an impressive series of documentary films in its first fifteen years, an established track record of documentaries that have been shown widely at international film festivals. A broad emphasis on cultural and social themes has forged a catalogue of films on subjects of historical, literary, musical, artistic and human interest. There is also an exciting range of projects currently in development and in production. Stylistically, the documentary films produced by Viewpoint are multi-layered in their use of sound and images and often include narrative elements: they speak to the imagination as well as to the intellect.
Viewpoint documentaries have been selected for screening at the International Documentary Filmfestival Amsterdam (IDFA), the Jerusalem Film Festival, the International Film Festival Rotterdam, the International Documentary Festival Munich, Windy City International Documentary Festival Chicago, the Sydney International Film Festival, the Dutch Film Festival, the International Film Festival Vancouver, the Latin American Film Festival and many other more specialized festivals and screenings.
Viewpoint has co-produced films with NPS, VPRO, NCRV, RVU and HOS in the Netherlands, as well as with ARTE (France/Germany), ZDF (Germany) and IBA (Israel) abroad. Documentaries produced by Viewpoint have been broadcast on national television in the Netherlands, and on ARTE, ZDF, IBA, MTV-Finland, Televizja Polska (Poland), and SBS (Australia).
Over recent years, the company has branched out into new areas. A subsidiary production company, EyeWonder Films, has been established to produce feature films with strong visual and poetic qualities. In 2001, EyeWonder produced Magonia by Ineke Smits, a feature-length production that was shown in Rotterdam as well as at the Toronto International Film Festival, and was an official selection at the San Sebastian Film Festival. A mystical tale filmed in the Netherlands and the Republic of Georgia, Magonia enjoyed extensive critical acclaim at home and abroad, and was awarded top prize at the Istanbul International Film Festival in April 2002. Viewpoint has also taken steps into the multimedia arena, sponsoring art exhibitions to coincide with its latest productions, producing DVDs and soundtracks and organizing conferences on issues linked to its projects and pertinent to society at large. Viewpoint Productions is associated with the post-production company Editpoint, which offers full-service facilities for image and sound editing, as well as design and finishing.
Viewpoint Productions has a commitment to high-quality, challenging and thoughtful documentary film that is also accessible to a wide audience and visually exciting. Contemporary culture has a marked visual bias and displays a hunger for real-life stories. This cultural phenomenon should be met with intelligent analysis and fresh visual forms, rather than the visual impoverishment and voyeurism of "reality TV" and its derivatives. In an age of images and information, there is more than ever a need for new ways of thinking about and presenting interpretations of the world around us. Viewpoint will continue to develop and support innovative documentary film that challenges us to rethink our understanding of the world in which we live.
